After helping support the underground Hip Hop movement in North Carolina in the late 90's as an artist, performer, student and activist, BadKat returned to her hometown, Tallahassee, Florida to pursue a career in the graphic arts industry. Still writing and recording, BadKat grew increasingly frustrated over the next six years due to the lack of real Hip Hop presence in North Florida. After only performing a few times in that period, BK was ready to make another move. Relocating to Athens, GA took some time and acclimation, but after only a year she began to sink her claws into the local music scene. Recording and releasing her first solo EP "badkat unreleased" in 2006 gave serious momentum in her climb to the top of Athen's Hip Hop ranks. This EP featured a few out-of-town artists, as well as, Athens heavyweight, Ishues. Being nominated for the Flagpole Music Awards after only living in the area for 14 months was a real treat, but reflective of the mounds of good press she had received over that year. Organizing shows, networking with venues, promoters and other artists, led her to her next big project in 2006. She, with the help of local Hip Hop fellows Ishues, Montu, DMZ Family and countless others, Hip Hop Homecoming was a music festival created to open doors for artists within the venue-packed local area. That following summer BadKat paired with local Lay Park Community Center for their annual 'Family & Friend's Day' to provide the event 'Summer Splash,' which was a four-hour Hip Hop pool party. Open and free to the public, with various other highlights throughout the program. Later in the year, BadKat released a sampler of the 'Alternative MixTape' (to be released in full at the end of the year), which was an experimental trip down memory lane. Sampling and remixing various songs from the industrial and alt-rock era, BadKat puts forth powerful and emotional lyrics to some of our old favorites. Many collaborations on this project helped create a network of artists that were ready to think outside the box to create something new and different. By July 2007 she was in full throttle planning-mode, preparing Athens for another week-long Hip Hop festival, solidifying the Hip Hop communities' hold on Hip Hop Homecoming week. Teaming up with ATHFactor Entertainment, DMZ, and Blue Flashing Light, this week's event hosted over 130 artists. It was an incredible challenge, but once again Athens Hip Hop would achieve success! BadKat has worked on several collaborations over recent months, and has little by little been sharing her newest work with her fans through her recent live performances. Concentrating on setting dates for a 2008 tour in the states and over seas, BadKat is looking forward to working on her next project "The Fate of the Union Address," which will be a full-length, self-produced album, said to be a symbol of courage and triumph for women everywhere in these difficult times. Expect to hear some of the most riveting political commentary ever to-be heard in Hip Hop, as well as her usual graceful tones, rhythmic expression, and topped with an aggressive nature and confidence all her own.
