Band - F/R/E/N
Rui Faustino (dr), Jan Roder (b), Silke Eberhard (as), Nikolaus Neuser (tp)
‘Patchwork’ is the term that Portuguese drummer Rui Faustino uses to describe
the adventure resulting from his stay in Berlin in recent years. In one of the vivid centres of new European jazz, Faustino has nurtured long lasting bonds with his generation of musicians who have their own understanding of jazz. The drummer‘s breakthrough in Portugal occurred in this year’s 6th edition of ‘Jazz im Goethe-Garten’ where he was called to present his newest project with German musicians from the Berlin ‘free’ scene. He enlisted saxophonist Silke Eberhard, trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser and double-bassist Jan Roder, a regular member of Alexander von Schlippenbach’s Monk’s Casino Quartet. The Faustino/Roder/Eberhard/Neuser concert at JiGG 2010 festival created such a positive impact that it became imperative to capture this period of activity on a record. Out of a session, the record called ‘50’ fully exemplifies a particular case of artistic migration and brings relevance to an intensif ied exchange between Portuguese and other European musicians. The record is comprised of five compositions by Rui Faustino and four improvisations where musical interaction and instrumental excellence is evident. This Jazz doesn’t evoke paroxycal libertarian movements but rather an organized path where each voice is individually contemplated allowing all musicians to shine: whilst evoking archetypes, it inscribes itself def initely in a modern sensitivity where nothing is left unattended. An extraordinary merit in current times. (by Rui Neves )
