Band - ROSE/HEATHER/THOMAS
ROSE/HEATHER/THOMAS
SIMON ROSE ALTO/ BARITONE SAXOPHONE
STEVE HEATHER DRUMS
CLAYTON THOMAS DOUBLE BASS
Off the lead momentum, highly textural salvos, spatial visions on a grand scale reveal surprisingly beautiful detail as the smoke clears.
This new trio features the extreme, telepathic shifts in the pocket grooves and totally unexpected sonic material of Australian rhythm section Clayton Thomas and Steve Heather - working here for the first time with Simon Rose (UK/Berlin) - a reed player who has marked out a singularly intense alto saxophone approach, in Europe and North America, which he now extends to the larger bore of the baritone.
Simon Rose, baritone/alto saxophone performances have ranged from solo to improvising orchestras in Europe, US and Canada. Interest as a free improviser developed exploring the possibilities created by limiting himself to the alto saxophone (solo alto ‘Procession’ FMR 2005). During the last two years while based in San Francisco and Berlin, Rose has introduced the baritone saxophone, (forthcoming solo baritone ‘Schmetterling’ Not Two Records, 2011). Recent collaboration in small groups have included Jan Roder, Mark Sanders, Kjell Nordeson, Simon Fell, Christian Marien, Oluyemi Thomas, Klaus Janek, Steve Noble, Chris Chafe, Kanoko Nishi, Ava Mendoza, Weasel Walter, Dave Tucker, Damon Smith, Pauline Oliveros, Charity Chan, Colin Stetson, Dominic Lash, Hilary Jeffery, Alan Wilkinson and Pascal Nichols amongst others. Participation in large groups has been with Marco Eneidi Orchestra, London Improvisers Orchestra, Ensemble directed by Evan Parker and Roland Ramanan Tentet.
Steve Heather, drums, studied percussion/improvisation at The Victorian College of the Art in Australia (1991) and Performance Art at DasArts/Amsterdam (2006). Since 1994 Steven Heather has been performing and recording as a musician regularly in Australia, Europe, America and Asia. Currently living in Berlin, he plays in all sorts of groups, from impro, electro-acoustic and jazz, to rock, noise and dub. His current music projects include DAIRY (Andy Moor, Yannis Kyrialides, Joe Williamson), BOOKLET (Toby Delius, Joe Williamson) THE UNDERSTATED BROWN (Thomas Meadowcroft, Boris Hauf), MRS CONCEPTION, OCHASA, SAND, HALF WOLF (Martin Siewert, Boris Hauf, EFZEQ (Martin Siewert, Boris Hauf, Burkhard Stangl, Billy Roz) and solo performances/installations as ELECTRIC BONGO BONGO. He composes and performs regularly in the fields of dance, theatre, film new media, performance and has had residencies in Australia, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Clayton Thomas is a double bassist and grass roots organiser working in the broad spectrum of improvised and experimental music – drawing inspiration from creative music of all eras. He current projects include FREENOLOGY with Sonny Simmons & Paul Lovens, THYMOPHLAEIN with Anthony Pateras,, Jerome Noetinger, Will Guthrie & Nathasha Anderson, ELLASPEED with Asi Foecker, Andy Moor, Magda Mayas and Tony Buck and THE ASTRONOMICAL UNIT with Matthias Muller and Christian Marien – among many others.
